First WOCLR Post Retreat “Reunion” was a great success!

Participants of the 2013 Women of Color Leadership Retreat, as well as a number of participants from previous WOCLR’s, came together to celebrate our growing, supportive, vibrant, diverse and joyful community this past Monday, January 27, 2014 in The Manor in Waterman.

The Women of Color Leadership Retreats takes place each Fall semester and has done so for the past five years. The event is truly collaborative, supported by numerous campus organizations, but  created and primarily organized by both The Women’s Center and The ALANA Student Center.

During the, always transformative, retreat participants engage in rich discussions around their intersecting identities and how such identities allow them to cultivate strong, rewarding and unique leadership styles.  Dominant leadership models, are closely examined and often re-defined through the lens of both gender and race, as well as multiculturalism, nationality, spirituality and the breadth of intelligence, heart and wisdom that a diverse group of women of color bring to the table (any table).

At the Reunion, participants greeted each other with warm hugs and gleeful smiles. One past participant said of her experience, “it was at the retreat that I first met many of the women that went on to build my community of sisterhood here at UVM.”

This is the first post WOCLR event of it’s kind. The event was created in order to speak to the desire of WOCLR participants to keep in touch and continue to grow and build our community.

In addition to the Reunion event, past participants come together every other week to enjoy a WOCLR brown bag lunch. If you are a past WOCLR participant and would like to join our announcement list please contact Maria Teixeira, at the Women’s Center, or Sarah Childs, at The ALANA Student Center.
