STUDYING QUIET:
SOME THOUGHTS ON READING BLACK CULTURE
WITH ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR KEVIN QUASHIE
FROM SMITH COLLEGE’S
(DEPARTMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES & PROGRAM FOR THE STUDY OF WOMEN AND GENDER)
For more than a decade, I have been interested in how a notion of quiet might change the common ways we understand black American culture. This question has been prominent in my teaching at Smith College and is considered in a book published last summer, The Sovereignty of Quiet. In this informal conversation, I will talk about this idea of quiet, and how it has gained meaningfulness through my work at the college.
